For the less initiated, the whole 10 mins from start of chapter is a crash course on breast screening.
A three minute online explanation of over-detection in breast screening then listening/watching from 7 through to 10 minutes in, Chapter 2 of this public health online screening module puts things in a nutshell.
It seems the real argument is between those who want to give women access to full and accurate information about the consequences, and those who don’t. At the end of a talk given at a Europa Donna conference in Milan 1997, a Radiologist Screening Director from the Netherlands stood up and said ‘I disagree with everything you say, we have to lie to women’. When asked ‘Why do we have to lie to women’?’ she replied ‘Because if we don’t lie they won’t come.’ (This is quoted with permission from the speaker.)
