Cancers, self referral – and yet more overdiagnosis?

Self-referral for cancer symptoms seems an excellent idea – bypass the ‘gate-keeper’ – get the tests one needs directly. But how will this work in practice, with resources stretched to their limit and A & E services about to implode?
