The unspoken word – what every doctor needs to know

It is so good to see a patient holding the position of BMJ editor and Rosamund Snow’s article, ‘Do you know what your patient is thinking?’ is likely to prompt some interesting responses from patients and, I hope, doctors.

It can be difficult to be a patient, anxious, lacking information, feeling dependent – and aware of other patients waiting in line. We usually hope for a good relationship with our doctors, but often communication does not go the way it needs to for that to happen. Let us hope this editorial appointment has an impact towards breaking down the barriers of Us and Them.
